I realize “Captain Cosmic” is not specifically Marin Nostalgia…but, man, does it bring back memories of coming home after school at Bacich Elementary, eating Cheetoes, and watching Ultraman, Giant Robot, and all kinds of other absurd sci-fi treasures.   Remember “Bambi vs. Godzilla”???

KTVU Channel 2’s Bob Wilkins was “Captain Cosmic” (and also the host of the nighttime “Creature Feature.” He died a few years ago but you can still watch his work on KTVU’s “Creature Features” by visiting the Bob Wilkins website.

No, “Captain Cosmic” wasn’t just Marin…but it was LOCAL.  And it felt like such a part of being a male grade school kid in the Bay Area during the ’70s.

Bob Wilkins as “Captain Cosmic”!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a video of TV POWW on “Captain Cosmic.”  I didn’t realize it was syndicated on other TV stations (although it’s not surprising.  Why should only Bay Area kids get the chance to scream “Pow pow pow pow pow” at their TV?)

C3PO appears on Captain Cosmic!

When I was a little kid, any new information about “Star Wars” was a big deal.  Of course, without the internet and fan websites, a silly show like “Captain Cosmic” was my major source of important sci-fi geek news!

Space Giants!

When you’re 8 years old, it’s hard not to love a family of space giants who can turn into rockets and fight monsters.  There was a daddy giant/robot/rocket named Goldar who was married to another giant robot/rocket.  And they had a baby giant rocket/robot.  Of course, all the space giants knew karate.

Johnny Sokko and His Giant Robot

Ask any fan of the “Captain Cosmic” show in 1979 — one could never have enough giant robots.  As I recall, Johnny’s giant robot lived in a mountain near Johnny’s house or something.

I used to imagine if I were Johnny I’d hide my giant robot inside Mt. Tam.  In retrospect, people in the Kent Woodlands would have been pretty annoyed every time I’d call my giant robot down to Bacich Elementary to kick ass.  He’d be accidentally stepping on tennis courts and Mercedes, etc.  Huge liability.

This show was my absolute favorite.  Again, giant monsters battling it out over Japan every day after school.  Heaven.

Bambi vs. Godzilla

“Captain Cosmic” hyped this cartoon for a week.  I was really expecting something awesome. My first memory of being duped by the media.
