Pepperland Handbill, 1971
Carol Brandt writes "Pepperland was this place on East. Francisco Blvd (it's a Day's Inn now) that used to be
sort of a '40's and '50's sleazy joint called Litchfields - they had dancing and strange music there plus a "motel"
where people used to spend the night. I remember our parents saying we were never to venture down there
because strange things went on!
Then Mr. Litchfield leased it to the people that put on rock concerts and they called it Pepperland which was
suppose to be the "Filmore of Marin" (like the Filmore Auditorium in San Francisco that hosted the big rock
bands and concerts of the '60s - The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, etc.) In addition to
Pepperland there was also The Lion's Share on the Miracle Mile - it's now a ratty old building that I don't believe
has had anything in it for quite some time - just east of the San Anselmo United Market. Lion's Share had great
concerts but it was small. Pepperland became popular because it was big and had great bands, lots of
blacklights and light shows.
The way you found out who was playing at either the Filmore or Pepperland was to go to The Record King, a
record store just to the left of the Rafael Theater, every Saturday. You could pick up what was called a playbill
for free, which was a postcard sized announcement with typical '60's and '70's physcedlic artwork that told you
who was playing where, what time and how much it cost. I collected mostly playbills for Fillmore concerts - some
are worth up to $100 now and some even more and there is a who society of people who trade/sell/collect these
things. I also started collecting the ones from Pepperland but I only managed to get two for some reason. I can't
remember when Pepperland closed but it didn't last that long - maybe from 1969 to 1973 or so."
