Ted writes "Attached you'll find me with my left hand on my hip. I was ten years old. My mother and the five kids
lived right up the street at 315 Redwood Avenue from '60-'66. Then we moved to 49 Holly in Larkspur. But, my
old friend Pete Behel took this photo. Betty Behel, Corte Madera town clerk for many years, lived with her five
kids right down the street at 87 Corte Madera Avenue, across from the Speedee Mart (forerunner to 7/11).
When we moved into the neighborhood in May of '60, the Speedee Mart lot was the location of an abandoned
Union 76 gas station. LCM school posted a crossing guard at that corner of Corte Madera Avenue and
Redwood Avenue. The guard was old Larry Yule, an uncle to Mickey Rooney (who was born Joe Yule, Jr.).
Pete and I used to walk to school together and when we'd come to old Larry's post he'd yell out, "Here comes
Pete with his two left feet. Followed by Ted with a whole in his head!" Even though the plumbing didn't work, old
Larry still used the abandoned gas station's toilet. Boy, was it nasty in there! And we were so grateful when they
tore that eyesore down and built the Speedee Mart. However, the Speedee helped to speed the decline of the
old Mom and Pop grocery around the corner from us. We called the store, "Mary's". Mary and her husband ran
the shop. They were so nice to us rambunctious kids."
