QUESTION: Would Marin be your first choice today if you could choose

to live anywhere in the U.S.?  (If NOT, what city would you prefer and

why?)

ANSWERS:

I absolutely love Marin except it has become very snobby.

In a perfect world, I would retire early, sell my Marin home, and go to Costa

Rica or similar, and live on fish tacos and beer, and surf every day.

I still love it, but I'm an Arizona kind of guy now.

San Diego

Back to Corte Madera, baby!!!

I have a daughter who I am proud to be raising in Marin.  Sharing with her my

past here is very important. My family has roots here.

Carmel

Don't like the commute over the SF bridge.

Marin … Except there is now much too much traffic

I MISS MARIN! I WAS BORN AND RAISED THERE. WENT TO TAM HIGH

62-66

NYC

I love Marin and visiting the area, which I do several times a year, but it is too

expensive an area for me.

Although I do love Truckee, it still has that small town feeling that is getting

lost in Marin

SAN FRANCISCO!!!!

Lake tahoe or Aspen Colorado

…Maybe Paris.

Who wouldn't live in a place where the average home is $1.0M+?

Marin is so beautiful and if it wasn't so expensive to live, I'd probably be back

there!

Marin…or Sonoma county.

Where I live now would be my choice. If Marin was small like during the 50's,

I's be there in a heartbeat.

san francisco

Paradise. No traffic, Friendly people, Inexpensive. Sun in the summer, snow

in the winter, and perfect weather during spring & fall. I miss the bay.

Santa Barbara

I strongly dislike Marin and always have

Marin would be my 2nd choice.  Steamboat Springs is number 1.

Too crowded.

yes yes yes

- and part-time in Kuaii - because of the lush beauty there

Central Cal coast

Although Portland, OR is running a close second!

I've come to enjoy the diversity and comparative affordability of the east bay.

Marin has priced itself out of much of the real world.

I really love where I live now, San Ramon.  It has a lot of what Marin has to

offer.  However, I am only 6 blocks from the nearest Costco.

yes and no.  I love it there but 1. can't afford it  2.  enjoy a more diverse

(economically and culturally) community.

I prefer the Pacific Northwest. It has the green & mountains of Marin but it

feels more grounded, real, & authentic than the Marin I knew in the '80s.

too crowded

I love Marin!

Florence, OR

I like Marin but there are a lot of nice places to live. I would have to do my

homework to fine a better place though.

Where else would be nicer, but there could be a jewish deli or two. And no,

Max's is not what I am talking about.

Too expensive, too crowded and without much of the charm i remember. I'd

probably like to live in Burlington, Vermont

Sebastopol - is like Mill Valley in the 60s.

I have traveled to every state in the US except Alaska, as well as Holland,

Mexico and Canada.  Nowhere is better than Marin COunty.

If I could afford to buy back the family home in Nicasio, I would in a heartbeat!

Yes and No.  In terms of faith and values, as well as cost of living, it's not my

first choice, but in most other ways, it's ideal.

i really like Santa Barbara

Although we do have a second home in Corvallis, OR and we love that area

too - much like Marin of the 70's.

love the east coast now

Yes, even though I hate the rainy weather

Rather be in the Midwest - People more "normal"

Petaluma

too close to the parents :)

I'd probably live in the East Bay: Better views, better food, more of a vibe in

tune with who I am now.

Not sure, Seattle or Marin, however Marin is too expensive.

west marin, if i could afford it.....

Not sure where. Marin is too expensive and way too crowded

Absolutely, I would move back in a heartbeat...nothing compares to going

across the GG bridge northbound and seeing the breathtaking Marin

Headlands.

San Francisco - I LOVE SF!!!! The beauty, the romance, the culture, the

buzz, outdoor activities, the food, SPORTS BASEMENT- got a cheap pied-a-

terre?

Marin has the most beautiful scenery,  a nice,  mellow vice  (although not as

mellow as before!) and a lot of good friends and family.

Seattle WA.  If I was Bill Gates I would not live in Marin.  Too snooty now.

Rancho Santa Fe, California because of the weather

Monterey, which is where I work now

I love to travel ... but I love to be at home in San Rafael just as much. I would

never live anywhere else ... my firmly planted here.

I like where I am. Rural. Clean air. Not crowded.

I'm not sure about that.  It's changed a lot.  It is much more congested than

when I lived there and the pace is a lot quicker.

Either San Francisco, LA, or New York

I doesn't feel warm and casual like it did when I grew up there in the 70's.  I'd

prefer someplace a little more relaxed and a lot less expensive!

San Rafael, Dominican area...an old estate, with lots of Charm or Ross or San

Anselmo with a pool and land...Windship Park...that would be nice...

Marin was a wonderful place to grow up, and I still love to visit it, but as an

adult, I'm happier in a city with a diverse population and lots to do.

Probably here in Medford.  Second choice might be Hanover, NH.  Quality of

life, less stress, proximity to the mountains.

Taos/Santa Fe, NM...more diverse, more laid back, close to great outdoors w/

o traffic issues

Marin's great, but there are so many other fantastic places to live also. It

would be foolish to rule out other places, IMHO.

Santa Barbara its weather

We love Portland. I would not want to live in Marin - cost of living too high, too

congested. But - I love visiting.

Are you kidding? It's the only place in the world to live. Plus my folks are

there.

California has been turned over to the far-left loonies. Lynn Floosey, Carole

Midget and environmental nut Jared Huffman are reason enough to leave.

by the beach in so cal, because marin is a little over rated for how high real

estate is

Wash. DC

Professionally, it's the center of my universe.

Culturally, there's lots going on.

Fiscally, I'm well off here; I wouldn't be in Marin.

Only other areas in the US I would consider would be Portland, OR and

Chicago, but the weather is worse there than the worst of storms in Marin.

if I was wealthy and could live in sausalito. i do not like the commute from san

anselmo, but I love the town.

I still couldn't afford to live in Marin, and it has become over crowded.  Not

sure where, I have been to many great places but couldn't pick one.

Sonoma County is really, really special. Other places; Mindon NV. Corfu,

Greece.

Probably Bolinas, Inverness, Pt. Reyes. Not San Anselmo.

I love Marin, but am absolutely priced out of it, and it seems more superficial

and "yuppie" than it used to be. I live in semi "3rd World" New Mexico

Still great despite all the people and changes

I'd move to Ashland OR, lots of family there - they settled there 150 years

ago.  It reminds me of Marin, tho.  My second choice would be Novato.

My grandmother had the most wonderful house in Tiburon and that is where I

would like to die!!

san francisco.  marin is just too marin.

Once you fall in love with the bay area there is no getting over it. The people,

the place, the vibe. Only the Redwoods even come close. GODS COUNTRY!

Because what's not in Marin is located nearby...snow,

mountains...Carmel...Tahoe.

Too expensive and too many self absorbed and entitled transplants.  Not the

Marin that I was born and raised with.

traffic, snobs who paid a million for the shithole your parents lived in for less

than $30,000, even with all of this, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

We can still find peace and solitude, but have to look harder for it.

I want to live in a Jewish community.  I want to live in a neighborhood with

blacks, asians, "minorities".  I want more creative things for kids, too.

Western Nevada County is great.  It reminds of  old Marin socially with better

weather.  Well located for travel, recreation and less congested.

I'm in a position where I could move anyplace else, but it's hard to come up

with a place that would be as nice as Marin

I would have to say yes but I might choose west marin, there aren't as many

snobby people and kids out there.  That may sound strange to some.

It is up there, but probably not my first choice.  It has gotten a tad bit yuppie.

And needs a little bit more cosmopolitan culcture and demo for me

SF 2nd

There was no option for not sure.  I'd have to research that one.

Marin's a tie with NYC for me- love them both and wish I could spend more

time with my new son out there.

The open space, nearby coast, access to SF, Sierra, Monterey, redwoods,

great weather can't be beat.

Yeah, if the cost of living wasn't so out of hand in Mill Valley!

I like Santa Cruz for the same reasons I liked Marin. If I were alone, I might

move back to Larkspur.

If I told you then y'all would wanna come  here. nope

2nd choice.....Lake Tahoe!

Prefer a more rural atmosphere,  probably in Mendocino

You can't go home again. The area seems congested and over priced. I enjoy

visiting cousins who still live there ,and have all their lives.

i am a san francisco native and rue the fact that i do't have the cheese to

reside there

I like the small towns in WA and in the upper mid west, less ambitious, less

aggressive, more considerate than current Marinites tend to be

I love the Seattle area and so many things that it has to offer.  I loved the

Marin I grew up in, not the Marin of today; it has changed way too much.

Marin or Santa Fe NM

Healdsburg or north - a lot less congested.

Portions of Marin. It is the most beautiful place in the U.S.A. for me.

I'd move elsewhere in California.  Marin isn't what it used to be -- it's the new

Greenwich, CT.

not sure...don't like the desert, don't like the cold and snow, so what's left?

Guess I'm here for now

Absolutely! But the cost of living and housing is just too out of reach.

Petaluma still has the small town feel that Mill Valley had when I was growing

up.

Wish we could move back. Can't afford it & can't leave our jobs....

No place is any more beautiful than here. Air quality, open space, the city, Mt

Tam

i will be back, anyone want to help a kid return with a reasonably priced home?

I'm thrilled to be back.  Though various elements have changed, the essence

has remained the same.  After being away so long, I remember the good bits

Right now I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Seattle or Colorado Springs.  Reason:  memories created in new cities, cost of

living, and access to the things I like to do.

Not sure where it would be but somewhere not nearly as expensive as Marin

Nevada, love everything about it.

I prefer Berkeley Hills because it's beautiful, close to nature areas, yet within

minutes you're in downtown Berkeley with all it has to offer

Well, it's a toss up between here and Paris (France)

I can live anywhere. And I live here!

not necessarily. might consider it if the price were right. pretty much priced out

of the southern part of the county.

IN spite of traffic and expense to be here, it is still best compared to lots of

other locales.

It's tied with where I currently live, Venice, Los Angeles.

I long to come back to Marin half the time!

Everyone should be able to live in Marin.  But then, everyone can't win the

lottery.  Peninsula, Ohio is the place that just feels like HOME to me.

I like living in the Midwest because of their values. People living in the

Midwest are more friendly and unpretentious.

Sonoma (city of). For the moment, less crowded and still retains some small-

town feel.

Many...Santa Barbara, Maui, Italy or Paris (doesn't qualify as the US).  Marin

has become too over populated.  It's fun to visit, but...

Again, rural West Marin where there is limited housing is a possibility.  Santa

Barbara, San Diego, and perhaps Anderson Valley or Mendocino.

Too much development and too many transplants who've changed the face of

Marin.

San Francisco, DC, NY, to name a few, because, again, as beautiful as Marin

is, it lacks the excitement, culture, and vitality that I need to be happy

My children are in NY and Chicago...so I want to be east of the Mississippi

That's why I'm still here!

Marin, with its proximity to San Francisco, is at the top of the list but I love

living in New York City.

It sure ain't what it used to be, but, it's still the best

no b/c of cost of living and lifestyle, values

Too many tiresome elitists in Marin. There are several easy going, uncrowded

towns in Nevada or Utah that I'd prefer.

It's changed, I want to remember it for how it  was in the '60's and '70's.

San Francisco as its has more to offer for young people.

I like it right here in Alabama, very low cost of living, very low txes and the

state is very friendly to retired & retired military

My present city I reside in, Kona, is as about as close to Marin in the 60's and

70's as it gets---with the exception of all the tourists!

Santa Rosa, CA

Hawaii first choice.  Central coast of California second choice.  Marin third

choice.

cost of living! Marin is beautiful, but hardly affordable, and traffic worsens by

the year. Might retire in Marin!

I would love to live in Marin, but I love where I live now too. My heart will

always be in Marin and tied to Mt. Tam.

Maui. Do I really need to give you a reason?

But I can't afford what I used to have and won't settle for less.

East Armpit, Louisiana.  Why?  The State Bird (The Mosquito) is awesome to

watch during feeding time.

Jackson Hole Wyoming.  The scenery is amazing, the fishing is incredible.

The snow is second to none.

Cloverdale, Geyserville. Pleasant less stressful atmosphere. As a teacher life

in Marin had become impossible to raise our family

Being a Landscape Contractor I need to be in an area where people will pay for

that service.

My second choice would be Northern Virginia.

I love the beauty. I have traveled the world and always love to return home.

We have it all here. SF, Tahoe, wine country, great friends!

If I hadn't spent time on the East Coat, I would choose Marin.  Got used to 4

seasons, and changing of foliage colors.

Santa Fe, New Mexico, it's like Marin but more real.

Probably.  I love the weather down here and we have a good group of people

we've met but I do miss Marin.

too expensive and too crowded..maybe move farther north in california

The Ranch, above Gaviota near Santa Barbara. The natural beauty there is

quite spectacular.

yes, because my family is here.

For me, Marin is the perfect home because of its natural beauty - Mt. Tam, Pt.

Reyes and great weather. I'd never move away!

The development in Marin has tarnished its pristine charm

People aren't overtly hostile in Marin, except on the fwy, but they def aren't

friendly (they barely look you in the eye, let alone smile back).

Tough question. I'd like a house in Marin and one where I am now.

It seems after every vacation, I'm always glad to be back home.  Marin IS

home.

I've spent time (and played many gigs) in Seattle.  I wouldn't mind living there

for a while.

If I could live in rural Marin, or San Geronimo Valley, Marin would be my first

choice. I currently enjoy the small town quality of Sonoma.

No way ,,, Way to much traffic for me... I couldnt stand the traffic in the 60's..

Anywhere in the world??? Ummm Oregon isnt bad for now.

I would prefer to live in San Francisco or New York, and perhaps have a

weekend place in Marin?  We can dream, can't we??

ABSOTIVELY POSILUTELY!!!

there is no where else in the world...at least not in this country!

I like where I am! (Hi Jason!)

Tough question as I'd love to live in Marin but couldn't afford to. Seattle or

Boston - slightly less populated, slightly lower cost of living.

Pretty happy where I am today living in Greenwich, CT working in NYC.  Love

to still visit family in Marin.

Prefer SF Currently for the work commute but I plan to move back to Marin

some time in the future when I am no longer in my current job.

Somewhere outside of the Bay Area including out of state.

Denver, CO area. Lots of Mountains and open land.

There is no where more beautiful - or better to live

Too expensive, not enough diversity, too conservative.

Just about any smaller town in Northern California

Marin is too pretentious now, too crowded and the general population has a

sense of entitlement that is foreign to what I remember.

If I moved back to Marin it probally be west Marin, on a farm.

not sure where off the top of my head but, given the entire US, i would

probably go just a bit more urban

I would like to live in Victoria Canada,I would not live any where else in the US

then Marin!

I prefer Southern California weather and the entertainment mecca is still

Hollywood and I still work here.

I lived in Larkspur with my mom and loved it there.

Chicago is the perfect spot for us.

Love Marin, but the politics, traffic, and taxes are a killer.  Marin is definately

in the top three.

Vancouver, B.C.

But, really, I like everywhere in the world.

Santa Rosa (see above) or Sonoma

(Florence, Italy and environs is high on the list.)

I would prefer to live at lake tahoe if i could.

I really enjoyed growing up there. I like the hippie/new age feel, nature and

beauty not the "rich/spoiled kids"-aspect.Too expensive. Boulder for now

Having been removed for the stereo-typical Marinite scene, I am happy raising

my family where I don't feel like I need to keep up with the Jones.

We have a little rural place in Sonoma - less traffic, crowding, big houses, etc.

Combines proximity to cultural advantages of big city with pristine natural

setting.

puerto rico is good, st augustine florida is good, laguna in southern california is

good.

Wyoming

It's darn hard to beat Marin.

Right now Honolulu provides the best career opportunity, the best weather,

and the best quality of life for me

I don't like how Marin has changed now. I'm retiring soon and I would like to

live in rural New Hampshire, where a small town is still a small town.

family, great job/friends/schools and similar suburban life in Boston area

would like to live closer to my family, none of whom live in marin anymore

I've always considered Marin my home. I have family and my dearest friends

there. When my son graduates from high school in 2 1/2 years I will return.

Denver, I miss the ocean but Colorado holds everything that I love

Nowadays the Bay Area is too crowded.  In a perfect world I'd move to

somewhere like Glenwood Springs, Co or near Aspen, CO. But we love the

49ers.

I wish there was less traffic, though, and that I didn't have to work so much.

Mostly, I like living here cause of the Bopper...her smile kills me

I have traveled in the US & seen some beautiful places. I still like Marin and

enjoy living here. The only thing I don't enjoy is traffic!!

Just some small town in CA.

Not enough character space here. If i made 3xs the money i would live in

Manhattan for a bit. I would move outside the country in a heartbeat.

Pacific Grove/Monterey Pennisula. The most beautiful meeting of land and

sea in the world, plus golf. Marin would be my second choice.

I work down on Peninsula so living in Marin would not be practical...if work

didn't factor into equation, I would absolutely prefer to live in Marin!

Magicland, where the weather is warm, home prices are not ridculously

expensive and one's job entailed chillaxin' and drinking smoothies all day.

Certain areas in the northern part of the county still hold appeal.  But I really

find it easier to live here and visit there.

san francisco - prefer the dining options and cultural diversity

Still is the best. My other fave is NYC, but the winters are too damned cold!!!

Marin is too crowded and too commercialized.

Actually, you can't beat San Carlos, CA.  It is only 30 mins from SF and 30

mins from Silicon Valley, great community life.  I love  it!

I've traveled extensively, living in NYC for 33 years; and Marin is where I want

to live & die.

scottsdale, AZ - weather, sports, & single girls

anywhere less expensive with a scene for younger people

No Way! Too much traffic, high prices, loss of gorgeous landscape, etc., etc.,

etc. I think I live in the PERFECT place now - Bellingham, WA!

I'd like to live part time in Marin, part time in New York City, and travel for a

few weeks every year.

I think so, but who knows.  Marin equals home, family, beauty.  But it has

become too crowded and fancy for me.

Maui. Better scuba diving.

love it right where I am... CHICO!

Manhattan, New York

Atascadero: small town, great weather, great to raise kids, no traffic and tons

of freindly people

its too damn boring

I would never return to any place in Marin, even if I had the money. My

preference would be Sutter Creek and the Nevada City areas.

I would live in Marin if I could. On one of our trips back the kids asked what I

did wrong that we weren't born living in Marin.

Only if I was rich and retired. My grandchildren are there. I'd like to live in

Talpapa, Mexico

w/o visiting all of them I can't say.  Marin will always be in the top 5 just

because family is here. Hana is another top pick. And Timber Cove

some place a little more behind the times.

Lake Tahoe

Next choices for these old Seattle folks would be somewhere on the west

coast

San Francisco & New York City......

Every time I pull onto the Richmond bridge and the sun hits my face off the

bay I know I'm home. Marin to me is like the South to a southern man.

I am retired now. I would love to live in Marin if I could afford to live there

above any other City.

Would not give up lifestyle here in view of Marin real estate prices. First

choice would be Portland or Vancouver BC.

Too many people. Petaluma. Less people and a great place to live!

This is a hard thing I have friends and extended family here, but I dont like the

way marin has changed.

I would love to live in Fairfax again.

But it sure is getting expensive!

it has changed too much for the worse.  it is to expemsive and snobby   I

would move further north.

That is why I moved back from living in Sonoma County for 6 years.

Followed closely by Santa Barbara, then Carmel by the Sea.

SF - Portland - or Austin

I love Fairfax and San Anselmo and can't wait to move back.

if it was affordable for us average 30-somethings

The Bay Area has more to offer - in a reasonably paced, civilized way - than

any other metropolitan area I know.

Maybe San Diego, or some place down south near the Ocean.

Whatever would be the equivalent of Marin without the Marin prices. San Juan

Islands? Mendocino County? southern Oregon? No jobs there, though...

Too expensive, too fast paced!

I've lived in many cities and traveled all over the world.  Marin beats them all.

Sadly, my boyhood home that my pop sold in 69 for 100k is now worth about 8

Million, So I won't be moving home anytime soon

Now it is too crowded, too expensive and people care too much about

themselves instead of others.

Traverse City, Michigan

I did live for 5 years in Los Angeles and I still think I might end up there.

It's a toss up! I loved living in Tahoe (love the small, mountain towns and the

snow).

Tahoe

I would like to look else where, but Marin would be the easiest for us because

we have family there.

Santa Fe, NM -I lived there for two years and it was awesome.  Much less rain

than either Marin or Seattle.

Where I am now in Maine. It is very much like the Marin of my youth.
